| Mesquite, Nev., boasts a fair way to play
Las Vegas got to be too big and too expensive and too crazy,'' he said. ``Here, you look out at night and it's quiet and the stars are out, and you don't hear any traffic.'' In two sentences, Longlas came close to summing up what makes Mesquite appealing for a growing number of visitors. Situated 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, the town of about 1,800 offers Vegas-style amenities -- quality golf, a desert climate, mountain scenery and gambling -- but at a lower price and a more relaxed, congestion-free pace. Mesquite has six golf courses and seven hotels -- four of which are casino hotels -- and two spas. It is growing, but far from overgrown. On the north side of Interstate 15, which cuts through the heart of Mesquite, bulldozers crawl around the vast stretches of desert just beyond the edge of town.
Firefighters Gain Ground As Santa Ana Winds Decrease
Helicopters and air tankers dropped 30 to 35 loads of water on two fires that have burned hundreds of homes in the San Bernardino Mountains, near Lake Arrowhead. "They're taking it down considerably," said Dennis Bouslaugh of the U.S. Forest Service. Authorities said they had largely contained many of the fires north of San Diego, and all five fires in Los Angeles County were about 50 percent contained or more. Despite the progress, none of the six major blazes in San Diego County was more than 15 percent contained, and those fires threatened more than 8,500 houses. The top priority was a fire in San Bernardino County that threatened 6,000 homes and continued to rage out of control. So far, this week's fires have destroyed about 1,500 homes and burned 674 square miles across five counties, from Ventura in the north all the way into Mexico.
A sleep-friendly nursery made easy
Make sure the nursery is designated as a room for sleep. Keep the area around the crib free of toys and other fun knickknacks. "Crib distractions confuse your baby," says Conner Herman, sleep expert for TheNestBaby.com. "They'll make him wonder, 'Is this a playpen, or is it time to sleep?' " Clearing the space will help your baby mentally associate the bedroom with sleeping and other rooms with playing. "Babies can't understand you verbally," reminds Herman. "You need to figure out how to give them other cues." Start separating Though it may go against your natural instinct, Kira Ryan, another sleep expert for TheNestBaby.com, recommends putting baby in her own room for at least one nap a day from the start. "This gets her acclimated to her room, so when it's time to move in there, it's not a total change." A daily solo nap also helps baby and you get used to being apart -- these little breaks may be tough, but they're healthy and necessary.
Accused bunker shooter's friend says teen often talked 'crazy'
A teen who pleaded not guilty Tuesday to executing a young couple at an abandoned military bunker often talked of "crazy, crazy" things but wasn't taken seriously, one of his closest friends said Tuesday. "It's innocent until proven guilty," Rob Misetic, 18, said of Collin Lee McGlaughlin, whom he has known since 2003, when they were underclassmen at a private La Verne high school. "But if he did it, (he) finally snapped." McGlaughlin, 18, of West Covina, was arraigned on murder charges in San Bernardino County Superior Court in Barstow along with David Brian Smith, 19, of Covina. .
