DDA proposes Marquette-Ojibwa project
STOREY ST. IGNACE - A National Historic Landmark, the unpretentious former mission church that now houses the Museum of Ojibwa Culture stands in dire need of several structural and mechanical repairs that total $155,000 to $210,000, according to the St. Ignace Downtown Development Authority (DDA). Once known as the Fr. Marquette Mission, the old wooden-frame church facing out on N. State Street was reportedly built in 1837. It was moved to its current site in 1954, a small park memorializing St. Ignace's famed missionary explorer and is now operated by the DDA. The building's focus has also changed over recent years from a period-piece missionary church building and public park to a museum highlighting the site's history of native occupation by members the Ojibwa culture.
Earned income credit aids low-wage workers - if they take it
Lucy Crane, project director for the EITC regional initiative at the United Way of Greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky, said roughly 15 percent to 20 percent of eligible local households don't file and claim the tax credit - leaving an estimated $20 million on the table. "We find a lot of people that don't claim the credit aren't filing taxes period - people think they didn't make much last year, so they won't owe taxes," she said, adding that the irony is they don't realize they are eligible to get money. Of the 4,500 free tax returns processed by the coalition of community groups in the region, the earned income credit provided the biggest boost. The tax credit delivered almost $2.1 million to those 4,500 households - roughly 39 percent of the $5.4 million in total refunds garnered by those households.
How Vatican reacted to mission's wind of change
IT WAS established as a haven where Polish war veterans could worship and in recent years became a place where young migrants could discuss their worries and share their faith. But now a row has erupted over the future of a Catholic mission which exposes a split between the traditional church back in Poland and the new generation of economic migrants. At its heart is a reformist priest who tried to support the influx of devout young Poles, struggling to balance independence with the values of old Poland, where the church exerts a great deal of influence. Now Father Edward Hodurek has been ordered back to Poland by the Vatican and a hall used by the Polish community in Falkirk has been closed and put up for sale. Members of the congregation have been told to attend masses conducted by 30 traditional priests recently brought over from Poland and whose upkeep is to be paid for by the sale of the United Polish Mission. The migrants, led by Joanna Creslik, the chairwoman of a support group for the town's 2,000 recently arrived Poles, have launched a campaign to prevent the sale.
