Miguel Guillen is a disabled Vietnam Veteran who recently returned from San Antonio after undergoing a Triple Bypass Surgery. But his arrival home, wasn't very comforting, because a power surge ruined many of his electronics and appliances. "It could've burned my house, it could've done more damage with my family here," he said. The power surge not only cost him a lot of headaches it cost him and his family to lose a lot of their belongings. "We lost three air conditioning units, two DVD players, a microwave, several televisions, the refrigerator and a freezer" said Guillen's son Inocencio. "Ceiling fans went out, and light bulbs broke." The bigger problem, however, is getting the power company to help him pay about $3,000 worth of losses and repair costs.

Holland, a retired heating and air conditioning technician, chose to receive hospice, or end-of-life care, at home. But he had no insurance to pay for it. Yet the day he returned home, a nurse showed up. She talked with him and gauged his needs, entering it all into a laptop computer. The next day, Sept. 19, a hospital bed and wheelchair arrived. .
EU bid to freeze out patio heaters
They have only been popular in the UK for little more than a decade, but patio heaters could become history if MEPs vote to ban them today. The EU parliament is expected to back a resolution requiring the use of appliances with low energy efficiency to be phased out. Patio heaters are specifically targeted in the motion, which calls on the EU to act urgently and introduce minimum standards for energy efficiency on such appliances as air-conditioning, television "decoder" boxes and light bulbs. It also calls for the abolition of stand-by mode on electrical appliances. If the ban comes into effect and is enforced, it could cost pubs, restaurants and caterers in the UK up to £250m in lost revenue per year. The use of outdoor heaters increased with the new UK smoking ban, as well as growing use at home as garden accessories for the British summer.
