New Nike Sneaker Targets Jocks, Greens, Wall Street

The target audience for the latest edition of Nike Inc.'s landmark Air Jordan shoe is probably more concerned with its sleek styling than its carbon footprint. So when the Air Jordan XX3 is unveiled at the NBA All-Star Game festivities this weekend, sneakerheads probably won't pay much attention to what really distinguishes the shoe from its predecessors: the near absence of chemical-based glues and an outsole made of recycled material.

The Beaverton, Ore., company's new sneaker is neither the first nor the only shoe in the industry to be touted as "green." For Nike, though, the Air Jordan XX3 is at the forefront of a broader effort that is intended to please not just environmentalists and jocks but also Wall Street. It represents a systemic shake-up of the company that is supposed to result in manufacturing operations that are both carbon neutral and cheaper.

Commissioners approve renovations to Larimer County Justice Center

The county commissioners on Tuesday approved a proposal to renovate the Larimer County Justice Center in downtown Fort Collins to create courtroom and office space for three new judges.

Renovation plans include adding more heating and air conditioning units to the building at 201 LaPorte Ave. The renovation is expected to cost up to $2.5 million.

Money for the project will come from a 0.2 percent sales tax that county voters approved in 1997 to build a new courthouse.

County officials hope to have the work completed by July, when the new judges are expected to come on board.

Controversy over cutting of ‘Boondocks’ episodes

Sooner or later, any satirist who wins a Peabody Award for re-animating the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and having him denounce "Soul Plane" runs the risk of upsetting corporate America.

That's one theory being floated this week as "The Boondocks" creator Aaron McGruder informs faithful viewers of his edgy, irreverent Adult Swim series that Cartoon Network has unexpectedly shortened the 'toon's second season from a planned 15-episode run to 13.

Fifteen episodes were in fact produced but two, titled "The Huey Freeman Hunger Strike" and "The Ruckus Reality Show" aren't currently scheduled to air, allegedly due to controversial material targeting Black Entertainment Television executives.

On his Myspace.com page, McGruder has posted the following message to fans: "Okay, so … maybe it's a 13-episode season." More cryptically, links to YouTube clips said to contain content from the episodes posted on McGruder's Myspace page have been mysteriously taken down (when users click on the links to the clips to view them, a "We're sorry, this video is no longer available" message pops up instead).

Carrier invests in DeWitt campus

Driving into Syracuse from Carrier Circle, visitors drive past a bombed-out-looking hotel and weedy parking lots across the street from Carrier Corp.

Friday, Carrier announced plans for a $5 million renovation of its site. The air conditioning and refrigeration giant wants to sell off the parking lots, demolish an old building and upgrade the facade on its building facing Thompson Road.

And while Carrier's plans won't take care of the dilapidated Howard Johnson's across from its Thompson Road campus, economic developers say it will go a long way toward sprucing up the neighborhood.

Carrier President Geraud Darnis revealed the company's plans to its 1,500 employees during a visit to the DeWitt campus Friday morning.

"Our goal is to turn vacant properties into productive assets for the community, while reducing our excess space to make the campus sustainable for the future," he said in a news release.
