Have faith that things may turn out better than you think

Her heavy breathing added a sad background to the sorrowful scene. I prayed for her, but with little faith. Everything seemed to be so settled and final. One week later, however, she came out of the coma and was soon back at her farm home busy about her housework. Visitors there found her as positive and thankful for daily blessings as before her illness. God had granted her more years to serve Him and she was not surprised. Her additional time to live provided this woman of prayer many more opportunities to speak to others about her Lord and His love."I have but one year to live," said a tearful woman who had just received a terminal diagnosis from her doctor."I may not have that long," I replied, stressing the uncertainty of life's duration for all.In caring for the details related to her expected upcoming death, this troubled woman decided to fly to Rhode Island to spend some time with her brother while she had time to do so.

Talking cents into voters: Muscatine County educators hope they can ...

MUSCATINE, Iowa — A penny lying on the sidewalk is a common sight, as if the single cent is no longer worth the effort it would take to pick it up.

But educators and administrators throughout Muscatine County have learned how far a penny can go over the past

eight years.

A drive past any of the county’s four school districts provides examples of the way pennies have become million-dollar projects in Muscatine County.

n West Liberty has a new high schooln Wilton High School students are performing in a new auditoriumn Muscatine students attend a vastly improved high schooln Students at Louisa-Muscatine Junior Senior High School have a new Iowa Com-munications Network room, a weight room, wrestling room and four air-conditioned classrooms.School districts throughout the county have also undergone a number of projects that make schools safer, more comfortable, energy efficient and attractive. And every one of these projects began with a penny. That’s because in 1999, the residents of Muscatine County voted to give an extra penny in tax for the purchases they and other shoppers would make in the county from 2000-2010.Local option sales tax is imposed on sales and services except for food, prescription drugs, motor fuel, automobiles, farm equipment and rentals subject to an existing hotel/motel tax.The tax is given to the county and divided among the area school districts in proportion to their student population to use for school district building needs and improvements.Time to start anewThe resident-approved tax, or School Infrastructure Local Option sales and service tax, also called SILO, is nearing the end of that 10-year period, and educators are hoping the public will vote to renew it.

Bulls banish memories of Saltergate horror show

We have to look at what we do at home with the way that teams come to us.

"Now we feel that, with the pace we have up front, we can afford to sit a little deeper and keep a better shape and play on the counter-attack a little more.

"It seems to suit us away from home so we just tried to tinker with it a little bit for the home games. Fortunately, we have had a great result today, scored two, kept a clean sheet which always pleases me, and it is a great result for us."

Hereford, with their regular central midfield pairing of Ben Smith and Toumani Diagouraga both sidelined due to injury and replaced by Kris Taylor and Sam Gwynne, took the lead from their first real attack.

Taylor's cross was flicked on by Clint Easton and Sherjill MacDonald worked the ball past goalkeeper Michael Jordan from close range.

Mountaineer offense is on the hot seat

GLENDALE, Ariz. - As West Virginia's football season comes to a close, the immediate intrigue is in the unknown.

That has nothing to do with who the next Mountaineer head coach will be. That's for another day, a later one.

It has everything to do with how 11th-ranked WVU will try to offensively get to 11 wins for a third straight season against Oklahoma (11-2) here on Wednesday night in the Fiesta Bowl.

There is some inkling that the Mountaineers (10-2) might try to go to the air more often than they have, although there's no strong evidence to support that.

First off, WVU hasn't shown any vertical passing game since Patrick White has been the starting quarterback. Former Coach Rich Rodriguez, time and again, labeled most of his wideouts as unreliable.

Cyclist, truck collide near OHSU

Twenty five years ago I was an avid bicycle enthusiast and rider. I realized how dangerous it is to mix cars and bikes and gave up bicycle riding on the public streets. It is just not worth the risk. Proponents of bicycles as a major transportation choice are deluding themselves. How many of our fine City workers go about their daily business on bicycles? Save for a few bike cops and the like, the rest of them use motor vehicles to conduct business. The idea that the rest of us are somehow supposed to commute to work on bicycles is irrational thinking. Painting boxes and lines on the roadways just encourages more people to use this dangerous and inefficient form of transportation and does not provide enough safety. Bicycles are regressive, not progressive. Doing the wrong thing harder never works.
