| Homes blend eco-friendliness, unique design
Theres been quite a buzz around town lately about energy and water conservation practices, and for years so-called green building has been a hit.
However a few homes in Truckee were built eco-friendly, not just to save heat and money, but because theyre just plain interesting.
One with the Earth
Sue and Jeff Cauhape have been living in their Tahoe Donner, earth berm home for 12 years. The couple maintains that, despite being for-the-most-part covered in dirt, their home is very bright and inviting.
Its not dark inside at all; we were surprised by how much light there was, Sue Cauhape said. We tried to sell it for two years, but I dont think a lot of people get the concept. Its odd, but weve been very comfortable here.
Comfort inside the home can be attributed to its thermal mass the walls absorb and retain heat, so the house requires neither heater nor air conditioner.
Moffitt House got up and went
If you think you saw an old, two-story house moving along a Hallandale Beach road Sunday morning, you weren't hallucinating. It was actually the 90,000-pound, 102-year-old Moffitt House. Local historians say it is Broward County's second-oldest standing residence after the Stranahan House in Fort Lauderdale. Developers moved all 2,450 square feet of the historic home, made of sturdy Dade County pine, from its original location at 134 S. Dixie Hwy. to a few blocks south next to another historic home, the 84-year-old Curci House at 324 SW Second Ave. The hourlong feat was accomplished by Brownie Moving and Heavy Hauling, based in Fort Pierce. ''It went very smoothly,'' said developer Richard Shan, 45, noting the event had been planned for about a year.
Pratchett to open planetarium
STAR novelist Terry Pratchett will open the UK's largest planetarium at Winchester's INTECH Science Centre next month. The popular science fiction and children's author will officially unveil the new £650,000 facility on Wednesday, March 19, before it's opened to the public two days later on Good Friday (March 21). Bosses at the Morn Hill attraction said a planetarium had been a burning ambition since opening the science centre in 2002. The 176-seat theatre will feature a variety of astrology shows, including presenter-led displays for schools, licensed pre-recorded films and movies on topical space events, created by INTECH themselves. .
